MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN

Greetings Members and Future Members and welcome to the website of the United States – Spain Council.

We here at the Council are committed to promoting and maintaining strong positive relationships among business and cultural leaders and government officials from both the United States and Spain. We are joined in this resolve by our counterpart organization in Madrid, the Fundación Consejo España – Estados Unidos, and Juan R. Inciarte, General Director of Banco Santander, who succeeded José Ignacio Goirigolzarri as the new chairman.

This is a time of challenges and opportunity for those of us interested in the relationship between the United States and Spain. And as you know, the Council is uniquely positioned to serve as a bridge to facilitate strong business ties and thoughtful dialogue among our national and regional counterparts.

The Council has a reputation of accomplishment under the chairmen who presided over it since its founding: Bill Richardson, former Governor of New Mexico; Former Senator Bob Graham of Florida; Former Senator Christopher Dodd of Connecticut and former Senator Mel Martinez of Florida. Since its inception, our organization has also developed positive ties with the U.S. Embassy in Madrid, the Embassy of Spain in Washington, and members of the Spanish Royal Family, namely King Juan Carlos I, Queen Sofia, and Prince Felipe of Asturias who is a graduate of Georgetown University.

Our two organizations meet annually, alternating between the United States and Spain at a Forum to discuss salient topics pertaining to trade, defense, investment, economic growth, the role of Spain in the European Union, technology, immigration, and energy. These meetings invite speakers from the highest levels of government in both countries, experts in fields of particular interest, academia, as well as major financial institutions and industrial companies worldwide.

Every other year we hold a day of triangulation meetings, as both Council and Consejo member organizations have strong investments and ties with Latin America. Our next Annual Forum will be held in Asturias, Spain in June 2011.

I strongly believe that with the support of U.S. Ambassador Alan Solomont and Spanish Ambassador Jorge Dezcallar, the United States – Spain Council stands on a threshold of excellent possibilities that will benefit both countries.

Sincerely,

U. S. Senator Robert Menendez
Honorary Chairman, United States – Spain Council
